When buying dog houses there are really two types to consider mainly: wood or plastic? Plastic dog houses are great in that they can come in different colors like beige, red, green, blue, orange and just about any other color you can think of. They can also come in different shapes like igloos, cozy cottages, or even Snoopy’s dog house! Whatever you can imagine it probably already exists as a plastic houses. Wooden houses on the other hand will have more traditional shapes so as not to increase the construction costs. This means standard houses with flat roofs and or plain hinged roofs will be more prevalent. Also these need to be painted if you are looking to add some color. Finally, an igloo wooden doghouse is just not going to happen.
Plastic dog houses are easy to assemble since there are very few pieces and for the most part come partly preassembled. Putting up a doghouse is a simple matter of fitting a few pieces together. That being said, the boxes that these houses come shipped in are usually much larger so make sure you have room in your backyard or house to accommodate the larger box. Unlike wooden houses which can be shipped much flatter like assemble yourself furniture, a plastic dog house will have large pieces that cannot be packed tightly. Imagine trying to pack an igloo.
Another benefit to plastic dog houses over wooden ones are the ease of cleaning. With a plastic dog house you can simply grab a garden hose and give it a quick spray and it will be clean without any additional work. No stains or smells are likely to reside in the plastic, though it is a different story with wood, which can trap pet hairs and grow stinky mold.
If you live in a cold climate or your dog is an outside dog, then a plastic house will offer some warmth due to the double insulation. A wooden one will not usually have such insulation as it is simply a single layer of wood, though a thick slab may compensate. Plastic dog houses usually also have raised floors so that your dog can keep warm during the cold and cool during the heat. They also come with detachable vinyl doors that also help with temperature control.
From this comparison, it is easy to see how the benefits of owning a plastic dog house far outweighs those of wooden houses. Plastic houses come in more interesting shapes and colors, are easy to clean and maintain, plus provide extra creature comforts for your pet. Wooden houses, while they may look better because they look like real houses, do not offer quite so many conveniences.
